June 2011 EADT "Hadleigh: D-Day approaches for Tesco supermarket bid" HADLEIGH: It’s a planning war that has been going on for more than a decade, but the final battle in Tesco’s struggle to move into the town could be decided next month. And already opponents of the proposal are drawing up plans to make their presence felt in the run-up to the meeting. The proposal to build a Tesco in Hadleigh has split the town. A campaign now called “Hands Off Hadleigh” has opposed the development since Tesco first announced it hoped to build a store in the town 13 years ago. Meanwhile another group of residents have formed a rival campaign to support the bid – believing it will bring lower prices and more choice to the town. Previous planning meetings to discuss the proposals have been very well-attended and animated and the meeting to finally determine the planning application has been moved from the Babergh council officers to the Grand Hall in the town to ensure as many people as possible can attend. However council officials are already warning people to arrive as early as possible because it is highly likely there will be more than the 100-seat capacity wanting to hear the debate. Next month’s decision will be taken by Babergh Council’s planning committee – and while both sides say they hope the decision will be final, there could still be appeals by one side or another.
